Moving to a new state can be exciting and overwhelming.
Not only do you have to navigate the logistics of finding a new home and settling in, but there are legal requirements that need to be fulfilled. If you're moving to Maryland, one requirement is getting a state inspection for your vehicle.
Registering an out-of-state vehicle consists of two items:
Maryland state inspections must be conducted by an authorized inspection location.
Maryland will accept the results of emissions inspections performed in some states. These are known as reciprocal states. Click here to see if your state is on the list (this link will open a new window to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration website).
Important! If your vehicle passes the emissions inspection in a reciprocal state, you will need to submit the results to Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP). Instructions on how to do this are also provided in the link above.
At the time of writing, a state inspection for new residents will entail the following:
For the safety inspection, an authorized inspector will examine various components of your vehicle, including the brakes, steering, suspension, tires, lights, exhaust system, and more. The inspector will also check the vehicle identification number (VIN), making sure it matches the documentation. You can visit the Maryland State Police website for specific information of safety inspection requirements, including this Maryland Vehicle Safety Inspection chart.
The emissions inspection is also required for all vehicles when they are initially registered in the state. This test will check that your vehicle's emissions are within the correct range. Additionally, most vehicles are required to undergo an inspection every 2 years. Learn more about Maryland emissions testing here, including frequently asked questions and what to do if your vehicle fails the emissions inspection.
If any issues are identified during the state inspection, you will be provided information on what failed and the repairs required. Once the repairs are completed, you can have your vehicle re-inspected to ensure compliance with the state's requirements.
Always check with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration for the latest updates and changes regarding state inspections.
Maryland has a network of authorized inspection stations throughout the state, including service centers that have authorized inspectors on-site. If you need an MD state inspection in Rockville, we invite you to visit Executive Wholesale Tire.
When you arrive, make sure you have all the necessary documentation with you, such as your driver's license, current vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
If your vehicle passes the inspection, you will be issued a certificate that validates its compliance with Maryland's safety standards. This certificate is required when registering your vehicle with the MVA.
It might be a pain to get your vehicle registered, but you'll feel great once it's out of the way.
By familiarizing yourself with the process and understanding what needs to be done, you can get back to exploring the wonders of your new home state.
